STUDY PERMIT
Canada welcomes large number of students every year. In 2004, Canada has issued
a total of 56,536 study permits. Canada's goal is to issue at least over 60,000
study permits to foreign nationals every year. Recently Citizenship and
Immigration Canada has introduced new regulations in better attracting foreign
students to Canada.
Foreign students at the post-secondary level are now allowed to work off campus
while completing their studies. On May 16, 2005, foreign students under the
Post-Graduation Work Program can be allowed to work for up to two (2) years
after graduation instead of one (1) year. This will provide foreign students
experience and a better understanding of Canada's labor market. In
addition, post-secondary foreign students are now eligible to transfer between
programs of study and institutions without applying for a change to the
conditions of their Study Permit.
These programs will better establish Canada as the destination of choice for
foreign students. Furthermore, this will better integrate foreign students to
the Canadian society should they decide to permanently reside in Canada.
