TEMPORARY RESIDENT
VISA
What is
a Temporary Resident Visa?
A Temporary
Resident Visa is an official document issued by the Government of Canada
through its visa offices abroad. This document is placed in a foreign
national's passport or travel document. A Temporary Resident Visa
document is issued to indicate you have met the requirements for
admission to Canada as a Temporary Resident.
The goal of Citizenship and Immigration Canada with
respect to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) to foreign
nationals as temporary residents in Canada is to:
-
Facilitate entry of visitors, students and
temporary workers for the purpose of fostering trade, commerce,
tourism and international understanding and cultural and educational
and scientific activities;
-
Protect the health and safety of Canadians and to
maintain the security of Canadian society; and
-
Promote international justice and security by
fostering respect for human rights and denying access to Canadian
territory to persons who are criminal and security risks.

This page provides you with the different
alternatives in immigrating to Canada temporarily. In 2004, Canada has allowed a
total of over 240,000 foreign nationals to reside in Canada temporarily through
a study permit, visitor permit and work permits.
This has allowed Canada to achieve its economic goals
through tourism and foreign students while addressing its labor
shortages through the entry of foreign workers.
Foreign nationals intending to temporarily reside in Canada,
whether for the purpose of studying, working or visiting, must
comply and meet the necessary requirement under the Immigration and
Refugee Protection Act and Regulation. A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)
must be obtained before departure unless the following applies to you:
-
Visa exemptions based on your nationality or
citizenship;
-
Visa exemptions based on the type of document the
foreign national has; and
-
Visa exemptions based on the purpose of entry.
Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and
Regulation there are 4 subcategories under the Temporary Resident Visa,
namely the Study Permit, Work Permit, Visitor Permit and the Temporary
Resident Permit (TRP) holders.
