BUSINESS IMMIGRANT - SELF-EMPLOYED CATEGORY
The Self-Employed Category was created to allow business persons with relevant experiences in cultural, athletics or farm management to immigrate to Canada provided that they make a significant contribution to the cultural or athletic life of Canada or purchase and manage a farm in Canada.
To qualify under the Self-Employed Category, you must have a minimum of two years of experience in one of the relevant activities of culture, athletics or farm management. These two years of experience must have been obtained during the period beginning five years before the date of your application for a permanent resident visa and ending on the day a determination is made on your application. Under the Self-Employed Category, a person must have the experience, intention and the ability to:

Establish a business that will, at a minimum, create an employment opportunity for themselves and that will a make significant contribution to cultural activities or athletics in Canada; or

Purchase and manage a farm in Canada.
The experience required in each of the relevant activities is as follows:
Cultural Activities:
-
two one-year periods of experience in self-employment in cultural activities; or
-
two one-year periods of experience in participation at a world-class level in cultural activities; or
-
a combination of a one-year period of experience described in clause (1) and a one-year period of experience described in clause (2).
Athletic Activities:
-
two one-year periods of experience in self-employment in athletics; or
-
two one-year periods of experience in participation at a world-class level in athletic; or
-
a combination of a one-year period of experience described in clause (1) and a one-year period of experience described in clause (2).
Farm Managers:
In respect of the purchase and management of a farm, you are required to have

at least two one-year periods of experience in the management of a farm.
Relevant documents include:
q Personal net worth statement.
q Business balance sheet.
q Business financial statements.
q Corporate employee payroll.
These documents provide an accounting of the applicant's assets and liabilities and help the officer to determine whether the applicant has the required business experience. They are discussed in the following sections.
